TOPIC: JESUS, THE DOOR OF SALVATION

TEXT: John 10:1-10

1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. 6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. 7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

INTRODUCTION TEXT

A story is told about an event during World War I. Some Turkish soldiers tried to steal a flock of sheep from a hillside near Jerusalem. The shepherd, who had been sleeping woke up to find his flock being driven off. He could not recapture them by force, so he called out his flock with his distinctive call. The sheep heard, and returned to their owner. The soldiers could not stop them from returning. In our text today, Jesus proclaimed himself the Good Shepherd. He is the only one that the sheep hears His voice, for He calls them by name and leads them to sweet pastures. Jesus also declared Himself the Door to the Sheep pen. Those who enter through Him find rest for their souls. Peter affirmed that salvation can only be received through him (Acts 4:12; John 14:6). There are also bad shepherds, who come to steal and lead the flock astray (Isa. 56.9-12; Ezek. 34.8,23).

As the Door, Jesus delivers sinners from bondage and leads them into freedom. When you go through "the Door", you are guaranteed salvation, safety and abundant life in Him. In order not to be misled, we must learn to distinguish the voice of the Good Shepherd from that of strangers - thieves, and robbers. We must allow ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit always.

Prayer: Lord, please give me the grace to discern your voice from all other voices.
