THEME: THE LORD GOD AND THE REIGN OF PEACE
SUB-THEME: Characteristics of ungodly rulers 7
TOPIC: Debauchery
TEXTS: Prov. 31: 1-9
AIMS:
i. to expose some biblical characters that were involved in debauchery
ii. to critically analyze the basic factors for debauchery and
iii.to expose the wayward styles of some leaders and celebrities in the society.
INTRODUCTION
The way many celebrities and affluent people indulge in debauchery in today’s generation is so appalling, that one may easily think we are in another Sodom and Gomorrah. Debauchery is extreme indulgence in bodily pleasures especially sexual pleasures, drug addictions, alcohol, indecent dressings and all that are considered immoral.
In what ways have leaders contributed to debauchery and how do we live to keep God's commandments about our duties and responsibilities to Him and our neighbours? These are issues to be discussed in our study today.
STUDY GUIDE
1. Define debauchery from these biblical contexts. Gen 9:20-22; 19:4-5,30-36; 2Sam 13:6-14. What should be the Christian standard? Eph 5:18.
2. Reflect on Prov 31:4-7 and give reasons why kings and rulers were forbidden from taking intoxicated drinks or alcoholic beverage ?
3. Critically read Rom 1:21-31. How can we link intoxication as a major factor to develop a “reprobate mind” ?
4. How do academicians, politicians, religious leaders, medical practitioners and others in positions of leadership abuse their persons with debauchery in our generation? What is God’s judgement on them? Gal 5:21; Eph 5:5-6.
CONCLUSION
Debauchery is like an addictive intoxication. Whoever is ensnared or enslaved by it needs the power of the Holy Spirit to be delivered from it.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The farther away we are from alcoholic drinks, the farther we keep from debauchery.
MEMORY VERSE: Eph. 5:18 “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit”.
