The Word of God 2 Timothy 3: 16-17

Welcome to hymnslab.com. It is a page dedicated solely to religious matters. We cover hymns and sermons, devotionals, sermons, and Bible study. We are going to look into a popular topic "The word of God". As popular as this topic may sound, it is not as easy as we see it.

Asking someone to define or talk about the word God is like telling the person to discuss the whole scripture or talk about God. Yes! God lives in His word and He is the Word.

So, no one can take the monopoly of describing or talking about whom God is. We can only talk about according to the revelational knowledge we have about Him. And the level Mr. A has worked and knows God may be different from that of Mr. B.

However, in this topic, we are given a text from the bible to draw our reference:

The Word of God 2 Timothy 3: 16-17

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

There are no other better definitions of the word God other than listed in 2 Tim 3:16. The Word is already laid in the scripture and it is for:

  • Doctrine
  • Reproof
  • Correction and
  • Instruction in righteousness

Verse 17 tells us what happens when these works are complete in the life of a child of God.

Let's try to define what is the Word of God outside the context of the verse we read. Like I said, earlier, it has been defined variously according to the revelational knowledge people have about God.

So, What is the word of God?

One important thing to note about the Word of God is that they can't be separated from God. The word of God is the mind of God. He lives in His word and His word abideth. God speaks to His people every day through His words.

No matter how differently you may try to define the Word of God, it must fall into any of the four-fold features above which are:

  • Doctrine
  • Reproof
  • Correction and
  • Instruction in righteousness
According to the Psalmist in the Psalms 119: 105, when he was defining the Word of God, he stated:
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Whichever way you look at this definition of the Word of God, it is still talking about correction and instruction in righteousness. The word of God is there in the life of every child of God as light to guide him or her so the person won't work in the dark part.

In another place, he writes; "the Word of God have I written in my heart that I may not sin against thee". The word of God here is still for reproof and correction.

Let's take a look into the explanation of the 4-fold features of the word of God:

The Word of God 2 Timothy 3: 16-17

4-Fold Features of the Word of God

  1. 1)      It is a doctrine

Doctrine means laydown of principles or the accepted ways of practice or life. The doctrines we see today practiced in the church are given by the scriptures. It depends on the individual churches and the foundational revelation. When you see a church that forbids her member from putting on jewelry, don't be quick in condemning it. The doctrine was copied from the scripture likewise those that approve the wearing of the necklaces and earrings.
The ways Churches worship God are embedded in the scripture. Like the doctrine of marriage, divorce, wearing of trousers, condemnation of drawing of a tattoo, cutting hairs for the dead, doctrine of the earring, and doctrine of tying a scarf. We shall take this doctrine one after another and mention where the word of God gave in:

.Doctrine of one wife: 1 Cor. 7:2; 1 Tim. 3:2.

Divorce: bible condemns divorce and some churches follow it. Mark 10:2 -12.

Wearing of trousers: God hates you. Deut. 22:5.

Wearing of jewelry 1 Tim. 2:9: Gen. 35:4; Exo. 32:2; 1 pet. 3:3-4; Hosea 2:3; Songs of Solomon 1:10. Note: Wearing earrings is not a sin.

Condemnation of Tattooing on the body: Levi. 19:28.

Condemnation of Cutting your hairs for the dead: Deut. 14:1.

Covering your hair in the church: 1 Cor. 11:7-9

2)      2. The word of God is for reproof:

it     It is used to cast a person’s sin in his/her presence. The word of God is used for reproof when a child of God errs.

3)     For correction:

The word will open your eyes where you are wrong. It will prick your conscience and makes you ask for forgiveness where you are wrong.

4)      Instruction in righteous teachings:

Any teachings or instructions from a preacher that lacks righteousness in them is not the word. Everything Jesus instructed in the Bible is full of holiness and righteousness. he never minced His words. he never changed the topic of His teachings to suit a personality who just walked.

Summary

The Word of God speaks daily to us. We should know here that what speaks is what that is not dead. Day by day God’s word speaks to you and in diverse ways. Our ears must be open for us t hear. The ear means opening the bible. A closed bible does not speak but, it only speaks to a listening ear.

6) The word of God is new every day: a verse from God’s word can minister 7 different things to you in 7 days when you give your ears to it.

7) The word of God is stronger than words of men: (i) it is the truth (ii)it is righteous (Ps. 119:75; 85:128 (iii) God honours His words Jer. 1:12
